Born and raised in New York City, Jeannie Motherwell inherited a love of painting from her father and stepmother, both professional artists. She studied painting at Bard College and the Art Students League in New York. Continuing painting after college, she became active in arts education at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT. In 1998, Motherwell relocated to Cambridge, MA where she works for the Graduate Program in Arts Administration at Boston University. From 2003 - 2007 Jeannie served on the Public Art Commission Advisory Committee for the Cambridge Arts Council. Jeannie's work has been featured in such publications as Hamptons Cottages and Gardens and Provincetown Magazine and is in the permanent collection of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM). Jeannie is represented by Lynne Scalo Design in Westport, CT. You may contact Ms. Motherwell at JMoth@aol.com.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings do not use straight forward imagery but rather explore deeper ideas inherent in the seascapes, landscapes and the universe that I interpret. I begin a picture using an acrylic "wash" which produces a transparency most often associated with watercolors. I paint in thin layers until imagery begins to appear and I work from there. I try to keep the paintings fluid and open and only leave imagery that is vital to the conversation. Sometimes there is a suggestion of a boat, a continuing theme in my work from the 70s. My newer work is larger, so the dialogue between the work and me is very physical. Because of this, I work on the floor, so I can see the canvas from all directions. I am particularly focused on the edges of the paintings and the spatial plays they define.
